Brucie Collections gallery presents the works of Francis Giacobetti, one of the most talented and versatile modern photography artists, a recognized master of light and composition praised both by viewers and critics.
The French photographer, art director and cinematographer Francis Giacobetti was born in Marseilles in 1939 into а Corsican family and later moved to Paris. At the age of 18, facing the choice between a carrier in law and photography, Giacobetti preferred to dive into the world of photojournalism and began to work for Paris Match. Later there was collaboration with practically every major magazine including LIFE, Look, Twen and Nova, as well as his work for Playboy. In 1963 the author made a significant contribution to the creation of “the French Playboy”, Lui. For two consequent years Francis Giacobetti was the photographer for the Pirelli calendar – one of the most prestigious projects in advertising photography. In 1975 Giacobetti worked as a writer and director for Emmanuelle l'antivierge, arguably an erotic drama masterpiece, in 1984 he produced Emmanuelle IV.
Although it is first of all his work on nudes and fashion photography that brought him international renown, Giacobetti’s artistic ambitions are not confided by the margins of genre. His HYMN series, notably, consists of 180 photographic portraits, deeply philosophical, of some of the greatest personalities of our time: from Gabriel García Márquez and Yehudi Menuhin to Dalai Lama and Stephen Hawking. The idea of the series which took over a decade to complete was to pay homage to the collective human genius that brought major contribution to shape our world as it is today. Quite remarkable is the period of Francis Giacobetti’s work dedicated to the life and art of Francis Bacon. The heritage of the outstanding expressionist inspired the author to create a conceptual photography book and a documentary. In 1994 a total of 200 photographs of the Francis Bacon series were exhibited at the Marlborough Gallery in London with featured publications in the Independent Magazine and the Art Newspaper.
During his almost 60 year long successful carrier the works by Giacobetti found their place in the most famous museums and private collections, such as Grand Palais in Paris, Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, Salla Canal Isabel II in Madrid, among others. The author’s portfolio includes innumerous personal shows and monographs, his art won him some prestigious photography awards. In 1993 he was chosen to introduce contemporary art in Grand Louvre, along with artists César, Buren, and Jean-Pierre Reynaud. The specialized British publisher Phaidon Press Limited included Francis Giacobetti in the circle of the world’s forty greatest photographers since the beginning of photography, those whose style is instantly recognizable, along with such names as Bill Brandt and Helmut Newton.
The selected photographs by Francis Giacobetti will be available for view and purchase in Brucie Collections gallery starting April, 17th, 2015.
